Work in this order:
\(12 + 4^2 \times 6\): exponent first, \(4^2 = 16\); then multiply, \(16 \times 6 = 96\); then add, \(12 + 96 = 108\).
Speed tip: circle each product before you add. In \(11 - 11 \times 4 + 8\), the product \(11 \times 4 = 44\) is one block, so the line becomes \(11 - 44 + 8 = -25\).
Common slips: adding before you multiply (\(12 + 4 = 16\) first), and treating \(4^2 \times 6\) as \((4 \times 6)^2\).
Follow the order of operations: \(12 \times 8 = 96\), then \(8 + 96 - 9 = 95\). Working left to right (adding before multiplying) gives \(151\). Subtracting before multiplying gives \(-4\). Doing the addition and the subtraction before the multiplication gives \(-20\).
Follow the order of operations: \(12 \times 9 = 108\), then \(8 - 108 + 9 = -91\). Working left to right (subtracting before multiplying) gives \(-27\). Subtracting 9 too (as if the minus sign applied to everything after it) gives \(-109\). Adding before multiplying gives \(-208\).
Follow the order of operations: \(3 \times 7 = 21\), then \(4 + 21 - 5 = 20\). Working left to right (adding before multiplying) gives \(44\). Subtracting before multiplying gives \(10\). Doing the addition and the subtraction before the multiplication gives \(14\).
