Split one number into easy parts and add the partial products. \(76 \times 36 = 76 \times 30 + 76 \times 6 = 2280 + 456 = 2736\).
Shortcuts that save time:
Common slips: a dropped carry, a missing 0 placeholder in the second row, and a decimal point in the wrong place. A quick estimate (\(75 \times 36 = 2700\)) catches answers that are far off.
Multiply the exact values: \(49 \times 22 = 1078\). Rounding both numbers to the nearest ten first (50 and 20) gives \(1000\). Rounding only 49 (to 50) gives \(1100\). Rounding only 22 (to 20) gives \(980\).
Multiply the exact values: \(47 \times 39 = 1833\). Rounding both numbers to the nearest ten first (50 and 40) gives \(2000\). Rounding only 47 (to 50) gives \(1950\). Rounding only 39 (to 40) gives \(1880\).
Multiply the digits, then place the decimal point by counting total decimal places: \(0.73 \times 1.7 = 1.241\). Counting one decimal place too few gives \(12.41\). Counting one decimal place too many gives \(0.1241\). Counting two decimal places too many gives \(0.01241\).
