How to solve integer operations problems

Most mistakes with negative numbers are sign mistakes, so handle the sign as its own step.

For a longer string like \(-3 - 7 - (-4)\), go left to right one step at a time: \(-3 - 7 = -10\), then \(-10 + 4 = -6\).

Common traps: treating \(- (-4)\) as \(-4\), and giving the answer the sign of the first number instead of the bigger one.

Worked examples

Example 1.
What is \(-13 - (-10)\)?
Show answer and explanation
Answer:
D

Apply the sign rules while subtracting: \(-13 - (-10) = -3\). Getting the sign of the answer wrong gives \(3\). Adding instead of subtracting gives \(-23\). Ignoring the signs and adding the sizes gives \(23\).

Example 2.
What is \(-6 \times (-19)\)?
Show answer and explanation
Answer:
B

Apply the sign rules while multiplying: \(-6 \times (-19) = 114\). Getting the sign of the answer wrong gives \(-114\). Adding instead of multiplying gives \(-25\). Ignoring the signs and adding the sizes gives \(25\).

Example 3.
What is \(-10 - 7 + (-4)\)?
Show answer and explanation
Answer:
C

Work left to right, tracking signs: \(-10 - 7 = -17\), then \(-17 + (-4) = -21\). Adding \(7\) instead of subtracting it gives \(-7\). Subtracting \(-4\) instead of adding it gives \(-13\). Getting the sign of the answer wrong gives \(21\).
